LAByrinth
Theater Company's Intensive Ensemble is an entirely new development
program for emerging artists.
Combining the ensemble spirit and creative drive of LAB's Summer
Intensive, with the inspirational, multidisciplinary workshops of the
Master Classes, the Intensive Ensemble will allow emerging artists to
push their boundaries, create their own work, be part of a
collaborative ensemble, and generate vital new theater.
We're very excited about this program, and hope to share the spirit of
LAB with a new generation of theater artists.
THE SUMMER
INTENSIVE:
Every year, LAB's Members leave New York City to spend two weeks on
retreat. In a beautiful country setting, we do three things:
1...begin our play development process (rehearsing as many as 40 new
plays by LAB Members and invited guest artists);
2...bond as a group and support each other's work; and
3...have fun by working our a**es off morning, noon and night.
Each year, we look forward to the Intensive in a deep, almost spiritual
way. Time and again we fulfill our mission to grow as
multidisciplinary artists, and over the years we've helped develop more
than 300 new American plays.
 THE MASTER CLASS:
LAB's Master Class isn't a typical class: we don't just tell students
"how to do it." We give them a creative space in which they
are
encouraged and enabled to take risks they haven't dared take before --
physical, intellectual and emotional.
The Master Class reflects the way LAB was born, seventeen years ago,
developing a feeling of group trust between 16 people who have been
selected to work together well: who show creative initiative
in
their lives, and who bring the commitment and support that make each
Master Class a one-of-a-kind experience. And, for at least
the
duration of the course, the participants build an ensemble of their own.
 THE INTENSIVE
ENSEMBLE:
LAB will accept 45 participants into the Intensive Ensemble 2009.
Each day, LAB Members and Guest Artists will lead workshops, building
on our Master Class sessions. In the evenings, each member of
the
Ensemble will be assigned a role in one of six new plays, and the group
will split up to rehearse with the writers and directors. In
the
latter half of the week, each group will present readings of these
plays to the rest of the Ensemble. These are plays that LAB
has
selected for development -- the playwright might be well known, or
brand spanking new. In addition to the workshops, rehearsals
and
readings, you'll collaborate with members of the Ensemble to create
your own new work.

When
do I need to apply?
The deadline for
applications is 5pm on Monday, March 16, 2009. Applications will be
reviewed for a limited number of interview slots, so we encourage you
to return your Application Form as soon as possible.
What
workshops are there?
Building on our
Master Class sessions, workshops are taught by LAByrinth Company
Members and Guest Artists. The Workshops will include sessions on
speech and voice, body, acting, movement, scene study, writing,
directing, designing, and producing. (Get more information on LAB’s Master

What
plays will I work on?
These
plays will be in development by LAByrinth Theater Company. Each play
will present the Ensemble with opportunities for growth:
strengthening the text on its path to production, and offering real
development for each participant as both an individual artist and a
member of the Ensemble. Additionally, you'll be encouraged to
create your own work during the week.
What
do you mean, I will create new work?
Throughout
the Intensive, all participants will create new, collaborative work and
present it to the Ensemble. This will be one of the most
exciting parts of the Intensive, giving you a safe and supportive
atmosphere in which you'll push yourself to take new risks and gain
confidence as a multidisciplinary artist.
What
is a typical day?
Your day lasts
from 9am until well past midnight. After breakfast, the full Ensemble
will meet for a group exercise, and then split into Core Groups for
morning Workshops. After lunch, you’ll participate in more Workshops,
outside of your Core Group. Before dinner on some days, you’ll watch
(or present) original work by members of the Ensemble. Evenings will be
split between rehearsals and presentations of new plays. On the final
night of the Intensive, each Core Group will present a new piece of
theater, as part of their culminating project assignment. The hours
will be long, and full.
Who
should apply?
Many
of the participants will be actors, but the Ensemble is also intended
for writers, directors, designers, and artists of all backgrounds who
seek to explore, expand and (re)discover their multi-disciplinary
theater skills. LAByrinth welcomes applicants of any race,
color, sexuality, national or ethnic origin, or religious
background. Bard College is accessible to disabled students: please
inquire for details.
Is
there any age restriction?
All
participants must be over 21.
How
much does it cost?
The
cost is $1,950. There is no application fee. The
cost includes: full tuition, accommodation in a double occupancy room,
three meals a day, and round trip transportation between NYC and Bard
College.
When
do I pay?
Half
the tuition fee ($975) is due upon acceptance. The balance
($975) is due no later than June 1, 2009. Please inquire if
you need information about our flexible payment plan.
Are
there scholarships?
There
are no available scholarships this year. If you need help for
the 2009 program, please inquire about our flexible payment plan.
What
is the application process?
That
depends on whether you want to apply as an Actor, Writer, Director or
Designer. Please choose one, even if your work is
multidisciplinary.
How
do I apply as an Actor?

If you are
selected for an interview, we will require an audition. You may also
send digital audition materials with your Application Form (required
for applicants unable to interview in person).
What
are the audition guidelines?
Those applying
as actors may audition in person or send a digital audition with the
Application Form (required for applicants unable to interview in
person). Acceptable digital formats include: DVD, downloadable file, or
internet link (eg. YouTube). Auditions can consist of any sort of
material, whether a published play, something you have written, a
monologue, song, poem, or story, but it MUST be one minute or less. The
required interview will follow your audition.

What
if I don't live near New York?
You
don't need to be local to apply: we can arrange interviews by phone,
and you can submit all your application materials, including actor
auditions, by e-mail.
What
is the interview?
Our selection
process is geared towards creating an ensemble, so we will select
people who can work well together in multiple ways. The interview is
not about assessing any one skill, and your audition or writing sample
is a way for us to get to know you better. We're looking for talented,
engaged, excited people, who are the right fit for the Ensemble. We've
learned, through LAB’s own growth as a company, and through years of
choosing Master Class participants, that meeting and talking with you
will allow us to make the best assessment of these qualities.
What
happens once I've sent my application form?
Interviews begin in March. If your application is selected, we will be
in touch to schedule an interview time.
What
happens if I'm accepted, but need to cancel?
If
you have paid for your place and need to cancel, the amount of your
refund will depend on the date of cancellation. Any cancellation made
before May 15th will be refunded 90% of the full fee (costing you
$195). Any cancellation made between May 15th and June 1st will be
refunded 40% of the full fee (costing you $780). For cancellations
after June 1st we can’t guarantee any refunds.
Are
there any hidden expenses?
We
don’t think so. We provide all meals during the Intensive,
but you can buy your own food and drink at Bard College if you
want. We provide round-trip transportation, between a designated
location in New York City and Bard College (leaving NYC early on June
22 and returning mid-afternoon on June 28), but, if you don’t live in
New York, you will need to arrange and pay for travel or accommodation
additional to that.
