LABYRINTH THEATER COMPANY’S
BRETT C. LEONARD
RECEIVES 2008 CREATIVE SPIRIT AWARD
New York, NY (February 4, 2008) – Theatre producer Daryl Roth has announced this year’s recipient of the 2008 Creative Spirit Award: LAByrinth Theater Company member Brett C. Leonard.
The Creative Spirit Award was founded 12 years ago to celebrate gifted
theatre artists and provide them with support as they develop new work
in an artistic residency.
At a presentation made this afternoon, Ms. Roth commented, “I have always had great admiration and respect for LAByrinth.
This community of talented, courageous, risk-taking artists gives us
all reason to be proud.” She added, “Brett Leonard embodies what
is best about LAByrinth and The Creative Spirit Award. He
is a courageous, thoughtful, talented artist, and a brave writer who
explores the layers of relationships and interpersonal dynamics in a
challenging and exciting way. It is my honor to present Brett
with the 2008 Creative Spirit Award.”
Brett C. Leonard has been a LAByrinth Company Member since 2003. His playwriting credits include Guinea Pig Solo, Roger and Vanessa, Scotch and Water. His short plays include Bobo an' Spyder..., and Interrogation. Mr. Leonard's debut feature film Jailbait,
starring Michael Pitt and Stephen Adly Guirgis, premiered at the
Tribeca Film Festival, and received both the Grand Jury Prize and
Emerging Filmmaker Award at the Lake Placid Film Festival. He is
also Associate Artistic Director of London's Shotgun Theatre Company.
LAByrinth Theater Company begins the second half of the current 2007-2008 season with the world premiere of Mr. Leonard’s new play, UNCONDITIONAL, in which nine New York stories converge in a racially and sexually charged tale of love, justice, rage and betrayal.
With direction by Mark Wing-Davey, the cast of UNCONDITIONAL
features Chris Chalk, Anna Chlumsky, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Kevin Geer,
Trevor Long, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Yolonda Ross, and Isiah
Whitlock, Jr. Preview performances begin Thursday, February 7,
2008 at The Public Theater (425 Lafayette Street). Opening night is set for Monday, February 18, 2008 at 7:00 p.m.
