WORLD PREMIERE OFF-BROADWAY PRODUCTIONS

Cops, rappers, dealers, teachers, hustlers, husbands and wives dwell in the rhythms of rap, raw humor, aphasic staccato and live jazz in Bob Glaudini's new play A View from 151st Street. After the success of Jack Goes Boating, LAByrinth reunites Glaudini and director Peter DuBois for another world premiere. LAByrinth previously produced Glaudini's Dutch Heart of Man during its 03/04 season. FALL 2007

Nine New York stories converge in Brett C. Leonard's incendiary new play UNCONDITIONAL, a racially and sexually charged tale of rage, love, justice and betrayal. Mark Wing-Davey will direct. LAByrinth previously produced Leonard's Guinea Pig Solo during its 03/04 season. WINTER 2008

DEVELOPMENTAL PRODUCTIONS

In Rebecca Cohen's dark comedy, Penalties & Interest, the insular existence of office life is a Petri dish for contemporary society where Lollie, Lyle and Amy try to keep their heads above water, while their boss Dick bobs up when they least expect it. John Gould Rubin will direct. SPRING 2008

Some clouds, heavy rain and strong wind sweep in on young lovers up a tree in Scott Hudson's Sweet Storm. Padraic Lillis will direct. SPRING 2008

COMPANY HISTORY

LAByrinth Theater Company has developed hundreds of new plays and staged 47 productions including: Jack Goes Boating (2007), A Small, Melodramatic Story (2006), Sailor’s Song (2004), Dutch Heart of Man (2003), Dirty Story (2003), Our Lady of 121st Street (2002), Where’s My Money? (2001), Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train (1999), and In Arabia, We’d All Be Kings (1998). The 2007/08 season will be LAByrinth's fifth in residency at The Public Theater.  LAByrinth has also collaborated with The Public to develop new work, with productions such as School of The Americas (2006), The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (2005) and Guinea Pig Solo (2004).

LAByrinth was founded in 1992 when thirteen actors joined forces to form a place to work.  The idea was to create a home where the group, for three hours each week, could engage in a variety of theatrical exercises designed to push each others’ limits and bind together into a tightly knit, uninhibited and impassioned ensemble – one in which each member is given the opportunity and support not only to act, but to write, direct, produce, sweep, paint, hang lights, etcetera.

The fact that the company now consists of ninety-eight members from a wide array of cultural perspectives did not occur through some political design.  It grew out of a shared artistic sensibility and a desire to create personal work that reflects the community in which the company lives: New York City.

LAByrinth is dedicated to developing new plays through a unique creative process.  Each play LAByrinth produces is first presented at the Company’s annual Summer Intensive – a concentrated two-week retreat where Company Members and invited guest artists create brand new material and develop current works in progress. By surrounding the playwright with talented and passionate artists, this supportive environment allows freedom of expression and nurtures creativity.
